Rollers, A True Island Legend
Back in 1960, three very important events occurred on Hilton Head Island. A little phone company called Hargray opened its office; George Cobb built the island’s first golf course in Sea Pines; and “Dad” Roller opened the first liquor store. The original location in Coligny Plaza, in fact, also served as a check-in location for property owners who wished to rent their beach homes when they weren’t here. In 1974, Roller's moved to its current location at 6 Lagoon Road, a building that shows evidence of being in the auto repair business before it became a full service beverage store. John Kelsey, who purchased the business in January of 2000, believes that he is the sixth owner of the business and loves what he does. But don’t think for a moment that the stores are stuck in the past. In 2009, a new location was opened in a former clothing store in Port Royal Plaza. In 2008, Roller's on Lagoon Road created a 3,000 bottle temperature controlled wine cellar. In 2006, the largest mini-bottle inventory on the island was converted to the largest liter bottle inventory when the state eliminated the requirement that bars and restaurants use mini-bottles. Roller's is also the largest wholesaler of liquor to the bars and restaurants on the island.
