"Making wine of great personality is not like making Coca-Cola or Budweiser (two things I quite enjoy). Formulas are the realm of consistency, but not of artistry. Chasing the Holy Grail of wine is an art form: ephemeral, complex and ever-evolving. No doubt, the understanding of how we apply our craft will continue to evolve, prodded along by new discoveries and new dimensions of knowledge. Through science and experience, we will see deeper into this complex chemical web that is wine, comprehending new relationships and developing new tools of artistic expression. This vision unfolding does not end here, as quite possibly our best wines have yet to be made." Jeff Smith (Hourglass Founder)

We'll also have the pleasure of welcoming Michael Cooperman of Hourglass Wines!

Michael joined Hourglass in August 2015 as National Sales Director and has lived and worked in Napa Valley for seven years. Twenty-five years spent in the restaurant, hospitality and wine industries has honed Michael’s ability to weave the stories of wine with a variety of audiences and deliver compelling, memorable guest experiences at the winery and on the road.

Michael attained a trifecta of some of the most sought-after wine credentials in the industry, having earned the Level 4 Diploma in Wine and Spirits from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) in 2008, and the Certified Sommelier and Certified Specialist of Wine certifications in 2009. Cooperman is an educator at heart, and possesses the ability to translate the varied, complex elements of wine into everyday, easy-to-understand terms.

Michael has been actively teaching about wine for over twenty years. He served as Director of Education for Southern Wine & Spirits of New Mexico from 2008-2018 and Education Manager at the Napa Valley Vintners from 2013-2015 just before joining Hourglass, and currently teaches from time to time as a guest presenter at the Napa Valley Wine Academy. It was during his time at Napa Valley Vintners that Michael met Jeff Smith, the founder and owner of Hourglass, and the two quickly realized they saw wine and the wine business in very similar ways.

“I feel I bring a deep passion for wine in general, a diverse professional background, an easy-going nature and, above all, a desire to open people’s eyes and minds. It is the story behind our wines -- our commitment to producing beautifully balanced and precise, terroir-driven wines from two of the most exceptional vineyard sites in Napa Valley, that really connects people to Hourglass. That story takes many forms- the people behind the wine, the genesis and evolving story of the wines and winery, our viticultural and winemaking techniques and decisions, and how the flavors of the wines themselves are attained and perceived. I think Jeff and I are cut from the same cloth in that we hope to instill a sense of wonder and appreciation for what we are trying to achieve at Hourglass, and are willing to delve as deep and as technically as our guests are willing to go.” - Michael Cooperman
